A marsupial, the koala carries its young either in a pouch or on its back. Because of their exclusive diet of eucalyptus, the koala can only live in southern and eastern Australia. They have sophisticated feet for gripping onto trees and are generally nocturnal creatures. Contrary to popular opinion, koalas are not bears, but are thought to have been called bears because of their bear-like heads. From our childhood, we have a much-loved toy koala bear called Ossie, named after his country of origin, and me (Joanna).
