Intelligent and companionable, French Bulldogs do need a decent amount of exercise, but they are basically lap dogs. As with many dog breeds their origins are debatable, but one theory is that English laceworkers brought them to northern France. These dogs are short and muscular with trademark bat ears and an expressive gaze. Toulouse Lautrec had French Bulldogs, as does Martha Stewart. The famous El Bulli restaurant, often described as the best restaurant in the world, is named after the original owners’ French Bulldog.
