The African elephant is the largest living mammal on earth. Ours is an African elephant, distinguished from the Indian by its larger ears, said to be shaped like the African continent. The elephant’s trunk is used for smelling, breathing, trumpeting, drinking, plucking and grabbing and is made up of about 40,000 muscles. Elephants have huge brains and are said to be capable of sadness, joy, love, jealousy, fury, grief, compassion and distress.
