With their traffic-stopping elegance and distinctive markings, the Dalmatian is a uniquely handsome beast. Probably originating in Croatia, they first came to England during the 18th century. Strong and muscular, they worked as coach dogs running alongside carriages and have retained a close affinity with horses. They were immortalized by Dodie Smith in the novel The Hundred and One Dalmatians and also the Walt Disney film. A well-known Dalmatian is Pongo, hero of the above-mentioned book and film.
