Often intimidating, the muscular bull can be unpredictable and aggressive: walkers tend to avoid fields with a lone bull. The phrase ‘red rag to a bull’ is something of a misnomer as bulls are red–green colour blind; in bullfighting it’s not the colour but the waving of the matador’s cloak that provokes the bull. A copper nose ring is used to control the bull. One of our favourite children’s books was The Story of Ferdinand by Munro Leaf, about a bull preferring to smell flowers than fight bullfights. In Hinduism a bull named Nandi is worshipped as the vehicle of the god Shiva. The zodiac sign Taurus is a bull.
