The sole ancestor of the dog and therefore close to our hearts, the wolf is an adept hunter who is fiercely protective of his family. Famous fictional wolves include White Fang (a wolf/dog cross) from Jack London’s novel, the big, bad wolf from Little Red Riding Hood and Three Little Pigs, Dracula’s wolves, and our children’s favourite book, The Wolves of Willoughby Chase by Joan Aiken, the wolves wreaking havoc in England. They are not always portrayed as fiends: in Roman mythology, Romulus and Remus, the founders of Rome, were reared by a wolf, and in Japanese mythology the wolf has an almost god-like quality.
